Isabella Bird Community School it is.
The Denver school board recently voted to approve Isabella Bird Community School as the name of the newest elementary school in Stapleton. The name is fitting, considering the school will offer an experiential approach to learning, and emphasize environmental sustainability and personal fulfillment.
Bird was a much-celebrated female travel writer and world traveler who was born in England in 1831. Not only did Bird tackle tough topics like the treatment of women in lower classes and the stereotyping of Eastern cultures in her writing, she also explored far-reaching parts of the world including 800 miles of the Colorado Rockies, mostly on horseback.
The school, formerly referred to as Eastbridge Elementary School, will open in a temporary location for the 2013-14 school year before moving to its permanent location in Stapleton for the 2014-15 school year.
The name was developed by a committee of community members, including parents, community volunteers and the new school’s leadership team, and was chosen to honor a prominent figure in world history.
The school will open in August 2013 with kindergarten and first grade at the Samsonite campus, at 11200 E. 45th Ave. To enroll, please contact the school at (720) 423-9900, or contact the Office of Choice and Enrollment at 720-423-3493. You can also find more information on the school here.
