Off to Middle School–An Event to Prepare Rising 6th Graders and their Parents for the Transition to Middle School
OFF TO MIDDLE SCHOOL! This presentation will help parents and students to learn how to succeed from day one in middle school. Students and parents who attend the event will receive practical advice, strategies and support for the transition to middle school. Event Schedule 5:30-5:45 Arrival, check-in 5:45-6:15 Key Note Speaker: Mary E. Miele Learning Specialist and Middle School Teacher. Mary will speak to parents and students about the transition to middle school. She will cover key concepts and strategies every family should know to help each student to succeed starting on day one such as how to navigate 5-6 classes all with different teachers and teaching styles, long term projects, tests and quizzes, typical middle school social, emotional and physical developmental milestones and strategies for coping with them. Break out Sessions: 6:15-7:00 Session 1 How to Manage it All Students will attend: Managing Your Tasks and Schedule Four to Five Teachers, Long term projects, 5-6 Classes, Transitions all day long, Homework in every class (where is it? did I turn it in?, Tests and Quizzes (when do I study!?), Oh my! Parents will attend: Executive Functioning How best to strengthen your child's executive functioning skills in grade six 7:10-7:50 Session 2 How To Do Your Job Students will attend: Study 101 In Middle school, learning becomes more independent, and studying becomes the key to a student's success. How do you do this? Parents will attend: Supporting Your Whole Middle School Child Who is THAT?! How Social, Emotional and Physical Development MUST go along with Academic Learning and what you can do to ensure your child meets his or her potential. Join us for an evening of true stories from Memphis educators and students. Chalkbeat Tennessee is hosting a storytelling event under the theme "Natural Consequences" alongside Spillit.
We'll explore how natural and unnatural, just and unjust consequences to actions impact our lives and experiences. Storytellers will deliver personal stories, and many of them will touch on how, in diverse ways, school discipline has impacted their lives.
