The ninth annual State of the Word poetry showcase will feature Middle Tennessee's top college and high school writers, poets, emcees and spoken-word artists at 7 p.m. at Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music. As part of the showcase, three Nashville young adults will perform in the hopes of being selected as the third Nashville Youth Poet Laureate. Proceeds from ticket sales go to benefit Southern Word and the placement of writing mentors in Tennessee public schools. “State of the Word presents an extraordinary example of a creative community, one that year after year inspires us to be our best selves. The young performers always amaze with their thoughts, creativity and ideas on how to make our community, schools and families better,” said Southern Word Board Chairman Anderson Williams. All State of the Word performers come from Southern Word’s programs, which are sponsored by the Nashville Public Library, Nashville Public Library Foundation, Metro Nashville Public Schools, Metro Nashville Arts Commission, Memorial Foundation, Humanities Tennessee, Dan and Margaret Maddox Charitable Foundation, and the Tennessee Arts Commission.
