Members of the Club 20 education policy committee have voted to recommend that the group oppose the proposed $950 million K-12 tax increase, according to the Craig Daily Press.
Club 20 is an influential association of local government officials, business leaders and others in 20 Western Slope counties. It tracks and takes positions on policy issues of interest to the region, and in election years its meetings are must-appear events for politicians seeking statewide office.
Rep. Millie Hamner, D-Dillon, pitched the tax proposal to the group and said she was disappointed by the vote, according to the newspaper story. Hamner was a key sponsor of Senate Bill 13-213, the education-finance reform measure that will go into effect only if the tax increase is approved.
Club 20’s next general session, including a board of directors meeting, is set for Sept. 6-7 in Grand Junction. The vote last week was a recommendation to the board.
