Watch Indiana legislators, superintendents discuss school funding issues

Chalkbeat and WFYI brought key Indiana legislators and two school district superintendents together Thursday at the Indianapolis Public Library to talk about how to fund schools fairly in the state’s next two-year budget and beyond.

Republican lawmakers say they want to fix the school funding formula to be more equitable between districts, but questions around what’s fair for addressing all Indiana students’ needs — from those in rural and suburban districts to students in urban, struggling schools — make the issue complicated.

The event, hosted by Chalkbeat, WFYI and the Central Library and attended by more than 100 people, featured Indiana House Speaker Rep. Brian Bosma, R-Indianapolis; Rep. Tim Brown, R-Crawfordsville; Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Lewis Ferebee; and Chris Himsel, superintendent of Northwest Allen County Schools in Fort Wayne.
