IPS chooses internal candidates to lead Arlington, Shortridge

Two Indianapolis high schools facing major transitions next year just got new principals.

Indianapolis Public Schools announced that internal candidates will lead Arlington High School, which recently returned to IPS’s management after years of low performance, and Shortridge High School, which will change its magnet focus to an International Baccalaureate program next year.

Stanley Law, principal of Shortridge High School, will be the new leader at Arlington as it returns to IPS control but technically remains in state takeover. Law previously was an administrator at Broad Ripple High School.

“(Law) knows Arlington students and the school community, and has a rich history with IPS and the city of Indianapolis,” said IPS academic improvement officer Ve-Lecia Council.

Shane O’Day, principal at Gambold Preparatory Magnet High School, will become principal at Shortridge High School as the program moves across town — a decision that was made as part of a magnet program redesign last year.

Greg Newlin, another IPS improvement officer, said O’Day was uniquely suited to continue leading IPS’s International Baccalaureate program in a new location.

“Shane’s international experience, passion for the International Baccalaureate model, and commitment to maintaining the traditions of our historic Shortridge convinced the committee he is the best candidate to lead the school community into this exciting transition,” Newlin said.
