Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Lewis Ferebee has withdrawn his name from consideration for the top post in Los Angeles, the nation’s second-largest school district.
In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, Ferebee said that he withdrew his name less than two days after it was reported publicly.
“After further discussing this endeavor with my family, the Indianapolis Board of School Commissioners, and those handling the search process, I have withdrawn my name from consideration,” he wrote. “It was an honor to have been considered for an opportunity of this magnitude.”
The Los Angeles Times first reported Monday that Ferebee was one of four finalists for the position, although they said another candidate was the frontrunner.
Ferebee, who has led Indianapolis Public Schools for nearly five years, did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday when Chalkbeat reported he was a finalist for the position. School Board President Michael O’Connor said that Ferebee had told him he was approached by a hiring firm for Los Angeles and asked to be in the pool of candidates.
