The Department of Education is filling its top finance role, empty for three weeks, with a veteran of outgoing Chancellor Joel Klein’s central administration.

Veronica Conforme will serve as the department’s new Chief Financial Officer, city officials announced today.

Conforme is taking over part of the role that was previously filled by Photeine Anagnostopoulos, who served as Deputy Chancellor for Finance and Technology until she resigned the day after Chancellor Joel Klein announced that he was leaving.

Conforme joined the DOE in 2003 and has worked as the Deputy Director of Finance and Administration as well as Chief Operating Officer for the Empowerment Schools network. She’s currently the Deputy Chief Schools Officer for Operations in the Division of School Support and Instruction.

Conforme will not have a “deputy chancellor” title, but she will be part of the Cabinet, the elite group of advisors who have the most access to the chancellor.

A DOE spokeswoman said that the department was still considering who should take on Anagnostopoulos’ work in the area of technology.

CHANCELLOR KLEIN ANNOUNCES THE APPOINTMENT OF VERONICA CONFORME AS CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER

Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein today announced the appointment of Veronica Conforme as Chief Financial Officer (CFO), a cabinet-level position, effective immediately. Ms. Conforme currently serves as Deputy Chief Schools Officer for Operations in the Division of School Support and Instruction where she oversees the day to day operational support to the district’s 1,600 schools and manages over 1,100 employees.

“Veronica’s experience with the financial infrastructure of our schools and central office makes her a great fit for this position,” Chancellor Klein said. “Her deep knowledge of our schools’ operational needs gives her the necessary perspective to ensure we make the best choices for our students in these uncertain budgetary times. We are pleased she is willing to take on this new challenge.”

Since Ms. Conforme joined the Department of Education in 2003 she has held several key financial positions including the Chief Operating Officer for Empowerment Schools and the Deputy Director for Finance and Administration. In these roles, she oversaw the non-academic functions of the original 332 empowerment schools, led the restructuring of the 32 school districts, and managed business operations for Region 8, including handling budgets, human resources grants, payroll, contracts and procurement and supporting schools with budget allocations totaling over $1 billion dollars. Prior to joining the Department of Education, Veronica was director of human resources at Columbia University Medical Center and, earlier in her career, held key financial roles in various non-profits.

Ms. Conforme was raised in the Bronx where she attended PS 114, JHS 166 Roberto Clemente, and Murry Bergtraum High School. She holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Spanish Literature from Syracuse University and a master’s degree in Public Policy and Administration from Columbia University.
