Voices from the 2013 high school search: Charlie Reeder

This profile is part of “Voices From the 2013 High School Search,” a project by students at the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism.

Charlie Reeder, 13, wants to keep her options open. The Manhattan eighth-grader said she likes English, math, and music classes, but she still wants to pick a high school that has a variety of choices.

“I’ll choose a school that has a lot of academics in case I change my mind or want to make a decision about what sort of career I want later on,” Reeder said.

Reeder, who is currently in Anderson Middle School, a citywide gifted school, hasn’t yet picked a first-choice high school. but she said she likes Stuyvesant High School because it has a lot of Advanced Placement courses. But that’s not the only reason. Out of last year’s 64 total students in Anderson, around 20 got into Stuyvesant or the Bronx High School of Science, so she doesn’t have to worry about being alone.

“No matter where you go you will have someone else right there with you at the top two schools,” Reeder said.

If she gets into a good high school, Reeder said she would feel confident but also pressured to be among the top students in order to get into a good college.

“But if I don’t I’ll probably just say darn and be a little bit disappointed,” Reeder said.
