Several hundred residents who live in unincorporated areas gathered at E.E. Jeter Elementary School Monday to hear Shelby County Schools’ administrators explain how they will be impacted by the pending municipality split.
Six municipalities plan to split from Shelby County Schools this fall and create their own school system. Shelby County’s administrators recently proposed a plan to rezone several hundred students who live in unincorporated areas. Some families will be bussed as far as 14 miles away from their homes to attend school.
The relatively-calm meeting lasted just 30 minutes with only a handful of residents asking questions about the extra-curricular programs and class sizes that will be offered at the area’s local schools next year. Several residents clapped when administrators surfaced possibly reverting Woodstock Middle School into a high school.
The next meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday at Woodstock Middle School. At that meeting, the district will address proposed changes that will be made to Lucy and Rivercrest elementary schools and Shadowlawn and Woodstock middle schools.
