State Board of Education Chairman B. Fielding Rolston has been reappointed to the board that helps set policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as The Nation’s Report Card.
Rolston, who heads the governing and policymaking body for Tennessee’s K-12 public education system, begins his second four-year term on the 26-member National Assessment Governing Board.
His reappointment, along with the appointments of six other members, was announced Tuesday by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan.
Since 1969, NAEP has played an important role in evaluating the condition and progress of American education. The board determines subjects and content to be tested, sets achievement levels for reporting, and releases the results to the public.
Rolston, of Kingsport, was first appointed to Tennessee’s State Board of Education in 1996. A retired industrial engineer with Eastman Chemical Co., he also has served as board chairman for other organizations in the field of higher education, health and industry, including the Wellmont Health System, Emory & Henry College, and Eastman Credit Union.
Rolston enters his second term on the National Assessment Governing Board as it oversees its first-ever Technology and Engineering Literacy Assessment, with results to be released in spring 2016; a move to computer-based NAEP assessments; and a comprehensive plan to expand outreach efforts and partnerships to inform audiences nationwide about NAEP resources and data.
He serves as vice chairman of the Governing Board’s Committee on Standards, Design and Methodology, and is a member of its executive and nominations committees.
